PASO DE JAMA – PURMAMARCA – HUMAHUACA – TILCARA – SALTA- QUEBRADA DE LAS CONCHAS – QUILMES – CAFAYATE – QUEBRADA DE LAS FLECHAS – MOLINOS – CACHI – PARQUE NACIONAL LOS CORDONES

The Northeast of Argentina seems to come directly from an 1800s Parisian painter’s palette and on this adventure you will feel like you are part of a Manet or Renoir painting. With the contrast between the blue sky and red shades, the orange and ocher colored rocks of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, which not surprisingly is a World Heritage Site, you can experience the same feeling you would get from the colourful fabrics of the Orsay museum. But the culture and nature of the Northwest also dazzle in their wonderful little towns and the city of Salta, also known as “The Beautiful”. Here, the colonial atmosphere will hit you straightaway. The beauty inherited from centuries past, along with the cultural climate that permeates the Archaeological Museum of Alta Montaña, makes this territory a magical place. You will also visit Cafayate, a small town surrounded by rocks and gorges, which offers the world Torrontes wine and hosts one of the most important archaeological sites in the area, the fortress of Quilmes that dates back to the Twelfth Century. This adventure is ideal to complement the San Pedro de Atacama trip in Chile, with the magic and beauty of Argentinean colours.

DAY 1: PASO JAMA – PURMAMARCA

In the morning, the itinerary will take you to San Pedro de Jama, which will include border controls between Chile and Argentina. This will be peppered with a visit to the village of Susques, which is known for its wonderful church and the Salinas Grandes: a stunning solid layer of salt that borders the road. We will reach an impressive height of 4,170 meters above sea level shortly before beginning a long descent along the coast of Lipan, to Purmamarca two thousand feet below. In this charming village facing the Cerro de los Siete Colores, you will spend a night inside a work of art. An unforgettable experience.

Night in the Amauta hotel or a similar, according to availability. Meals included (B).

Day 2: PURMAMARCA – HUMAHUACA – TILCARA – JUMP

Walking aimlessly around the picturesque and colorful streets of these timeless villages, visiting their squares, churches and craft fairs, will be the activity that this day throws at you. In Tilcara you will be left surprised by the amazing majesty of the Pukara, a fortress that predates the Inca Empire which has been beautifully restored. The colorful hills of the Quebrada de Humahuaca will watch you from above.

Night at the Hotel del Vino or similar, according to availability. Meals included (B).

DAY 3: SALTA – QUEBRADA DE LAS CONCHAS – QUILMES – CAFAYATE

The small town of Cafayate is the star of this morning’s trip. The road that winds through the impressive Quebrada de la Concha is a unique spectacle. Next to the wonder that will generate the geology of the site, you will be amazed with the grandeur of the archaeological site of Quilmes, a XII century fortress that you will visit to complete the day. These captured images will be carved into your memory. Once in Cafayate you can relax in the market or the square that adorns this charming village. Enjoying a glass of Torrontes wine will be the icing on the cake.

Night at the Hotel Los Sauces or similar, according to availability. Meals included (B).

DAY 4: CAFAYATE – QUEBRADA DE LAS FLECHAS – MOLINOS – CACHI – PARQUE NACIONAL LOS CARDONES – SALTA

Your day starts at dawn, when you will embark on your journey towards the city of Salta, whose nickname “The Beautiful” is a well deserved honour. The return itinerary we have created for you is different from the day before, but no less impressive: la Quebrada de las Flechas. You’ll find yourself browsing through the villages of Molinos and Cachi, which stand out because of their colonial architecture and lively cultural scene. On the road to Salta, you will go through the barren landscape of the Cardones National Park.

Night at the Valentina Estate or similar, according to availability. Meals included (B).

Day 5: SALTA – CITY TOUR AND AIRPORT

The last mementos of the trip can be devoted to getting to know the corners of the city which you’ve been to several times, without ever being able to grasp it in its essence. You will visit the Alta Montaña Archaeological Museum, where you will see mummies from the Inca period which Cerro Llullaillaco, with its 6739 meters of height (the third highest mountain in South America), has preserved in perfect condition. But this is not the only attraction the city offers. You will not have time to get bored because the 9 de Julio Square, the Cathedral, and the church of San Francisco, with its 70-meter tower will all be waiting for you. In the afternoon, a getaway to the viewpoint of Mount St. Bernard, where you will have a panoramic view of this charming valley, will be the final adventure on this trip before your transfer to the airport.
